Dear AUC/RASMB community:

Due to unforeseen circumstances I no longer find myself in the position
to continue with the organization of the AUC2017 meeting in Duesseldorf,
so with a heavy heart I have decided to abandon this plan.

But here is the good news:

Due to enthusiastic support from our community, not just one, but three
volunteers have stepped forward to jump in and take on this task and
salvage this year's AUC conference:

1. Olwyn Byron (U of Glasgow, UK) 2. Wolfgang Peukert (U of Erlangen,
Germany)
3. Helmut Coelfen (U of Konstanz, Germany)

I am sure each of them would organize an excellent conference. Hence we
decided to ask the community to vote for your favorite venue. To help you
decide, each potential organizer has pitched their venue and details below.
We ask that you to please respond and vote (only once :-) by return mail
to me
(don't reply-all).

I will tally the vote and share the results with RASMB. Please return your
vote by Friday, January 27th so we can get on with the organization of this
event. Thanks very much, and I am very sorry I had to cancel Duesseldorf!

Instructions:
Please mark your vote with an "X" to vote. Do not vote for any option if
you do not plan to attend
Do not vote for any option where you cannot attend due to a timing conflict
Do not vote for the same venue multiple times

My first preference is (one vote only):
Glasgow [ ]
Erlangen [ ]
Konstanz [ ]

My second preference is (one vote only):
Glasgow [ ]
Erlangen [ ]
Konstanz [ ]

My third preference is (one vote only):
Glasgow [ ]
Erlangen [ ]
Konstanz [ ]

Dates and venue descriptions:

The Glasgow proposal:
Olwyn Byron would be happy to host AUC 2017 at the University of Glasgow
on 23-28 July 2017. The reason for selecting these dates is to offer the
AUC Workshop and Symposium as a satellite to the joint 19th International
Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) and 11th European Biophysical
Societies' Association (EBSA) congress which is taking place in Edinburgh
16-20 July, 2017. This would allow participants the opportunity
to attend both meetings easily. Glasgow is 75 km from Edinburgh.
The travel time between the two cities is approximately 45 minutes,
via a frequent (every 15 minutes) train service.

The University of Glasgow is 10 minutes from the city centre by
underground train or bus and provides excellent conference facilities
- major lecture theaters and extensive computer clusters ready to go
for Workshop provision. It also has a huge portfolio of affordable
accommodation as well as more up-market hotels nearby.

Glasgow airport (7 miles from the University) offers direct flight
connections to all major European hubs, plus North America and the
Middle East. The city can be reached by train with intercity links to
all major UK cities (e.g. London (4.5 hours)).

The historic city of Glasgow, rich in museums and cultural heritage,
is in the west of Scotland, close to the spectacularly beautiful
Highlands and Islands, malt whisky distilleries and castles! Also,
from 4-28 August Edinburgh hosts the International Festival and Fringe,
one of the largest celebrations of the performing arts in the world.
You can sleep in September!

The Erlangen proposal:
We (Johannes Walter and Wolfgang Peukert) would be pleased to host this
year's AUC conference from September 10th to 15th, 2017 in Erlangen,
Germany.

Located in southern Germany, Erlangen has more than 100,000
inhabitants and is recognized as the medical valley with
world headquarter of Siemens HealthCare plus 500+ medium and
small companies active in healthcare solutions. Erlangen
is close to Nuremberg with a medieval style city center
(http://www.tourismus.nuernberg.de/en)
and world heritage city of Bamberg (http://www.en.bamberg.info).

With its 40,000 student, the Friedrich-Alexander University
(www.fau.eu<http://www.fau.eu>) is one of the largest universities in
Germany. It offers multiple disciplines, including a strong medical
faculty and faculties of science and engineering.

Moreover, it hosts the Cluster of Excellence "Engineering of Advanced
Materials" (www.eam.fau.de<http://www.eam.fau.de> ), which aims to
promote internationally recognized cutting edge science and brings
together 200 researchers from 9 disciplines with special focus on
nanotechnology, colloid science and particle technology. Our institute
of Particle Technology (www.lfg.fau.de<http://www.lfg.fau.de>
) with its affiliated Center of Functional Particle Systems
(www.fps.fau.de<http://www.fps.fau.de> ) is a leading institute focused
on particle formation, formulation and nanoparticle characterization.

The Cluster of Excellence administrative office has rich experience in
organizing international workshops and conferences. With its professional
management, it is well suited for hosting AUC2017.

Erlangen is located only 20 minutes by car from Nuremberg
airport. Moreover, it is easy to reach from the large international
airports in Frankfurt (2.5h) and Munich (2 h).

The Novotel conference hotel
(http://www.novotel.com/gb/hotel-5376-novotel-erlangen/index.shtml)
situated in the center of Erlangen was chosen as the potential conference
venue as it offers accommodation and enough space for holding the
workshops and symposium.

Greetings
Wolfgang

The Konstanz proposal:

The Konstanz proposal:
Helmut Coelfen would be happy to host AUC 2017 at the University of
Konstanz on 17 - 22 September 2017. Konstanz is the most southern
German university close to the Swiss border, one of the German excellence
universities and beautifully located on a hill near the lake.

https://www.uni-konstanz.de/en/university/about-the-university-of-konstanz/

The University of Konstanz is 15 min away from the historic old town
of Konstanz and provides major lecture theaters and facilities for
workshops. Since Konstanz is a tourist magnet in the area, it has a
huge portfolio of accommodation but the prices vary largely depending on
the season with summer being the most expensive but September is still
not cheap. There are no hotels in direct neighborhood to the university
since the university is located in a protected area. The most convenient
hotels are those in the old town with a good bus connection to the
university. The bus ticket is included in the hotel price.

Z?rich airport is the closest airport and is the major airport in
Switzerland with worldwide connections. It can be conveniently reached
by a direct train connection to Konstanz running every hour (1:05 travel
time). Flying to Z?rich is the best option to reach Konstanz because train
connections (except the one to Z?rich) take very long. To reach the next
intercity express train station takes 2 ? hours either to Stuttgart or
Offenburg with a regional train, although the route through the black
forest is certainly one of the most beautiful train rides in Germany. It
is possible to take the intercity buses, but they are not much faster
than the train but connect to further cities like Munich (2.5 h)

Konstanz is rich in cultural heritage and the location of the "Konstanz
Konzil" from 1616 - 1620 where 3 popes wanted to take power so that
all important people of that time came together in Konstanz to sort out
this situation. Konstanz still has many buildings from this time and
older because it was not bombed in the war. Konstanz is the biggest
city located at the beautiful lake Konstanz, the 3rd biggest lake in
Europe. Nevertheless, it's still small with about 70 000 inhabitants
including ca. 11 000 students. The surroundings are very beautiful. The
lake offers opportunities for all kinds of water sport. The Black forest
can be reached by train in less than an hour and also the Swiss alps are
close. A major attraction of Konstanz is the flower island Mainau,
which attracts far more than a million visitors each year. It is also
the place where each nobel laureates meeting in Lindau ends.

Important Note:
We still are awaiting a final official confirmation about the availability
of the lecture rooms
