Hence we<br>decided to ask the community to vote for your favorite venue. The reason for selecting these dates is to offer the<br>AUC Workshop and Symposium as a satellite to the joint 19th International<br>Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) and 11th European Biophysical<br>Societies' Association (EBSA) congress which is taking place in Edinburgh<br>16-20 July, 2017. This would allow participants the opportunity<br>to attend both meetings easily. Glasgow is 75 km from Edinburgh.<br>The travel time between the two cities is approximately 45 minutes,<br>via a frequent (every 15 minutes) train service.<br><br>The University of Glasgow is 10 minutes from the city centre by<br>underground train or bus and provides excellent conference facilities<br>- major lecture theaters and extensive computer clusters ready to go<br>for Workshop provision. It also has a huge portfolio of affordable<br>accommodation as well as more up-market hotels nearby.<br><br>Glasgow airport (7 miles from the University) offers direct flight<br>connections to all major European hubs, plus North America and the<br>Middle East. The city can be reached by train with intercity links to<br>all major UK cities (e.g. London (4.5 hours)).<br><br>The historic city of Glasgow, rich in museums and cultural heritage,<br>is in the west of Scotland, close to the spectacularly beautiful<br>Highlands and Islands, malt whisky distilleries and castles! Also,<br>from 4-28 August Edinburgh hosts the International Festival and Fringe,<br>one of the largest celebrations of the performing arts in the world.<br>You can sleep in September!<br><br>The Erlangen proposal:<br>We (Johannes Walter and Wolfgang Peukert) would be pleased to host this<br>year's AUC conference from September 10th to 15th, 2017 in Erlangen,<br>Germany.<br><br>Located in southern Germany, Erlangen has more than 100,000<br>inhabitants and is recognized as the medical valley with<br>world headquarter of Siemens HealthCare plus 500+ medium and<br>small companies active in healthcare solutions. Erlangen<br>is close to Nuremberg with a medieval style city center<br>(http://www.tourismus.nuernberg.de/en)<br>and world heritage city of Bamberg (http://www.en.bamberg.info).<br><br>With its 40,000 student, the Friedrich-Alexander University<br>(www.fau.eu<http://www.fau.eu>) is one of the largest universities in<br>Germany. It offers multiple disciplines, including a strong medical<br>faculty and faculties of science and engineering.<br><br>Moreover, it hosts the Cluster of Excellence "Engineering of Advanced<br>Materials" (www.eam.fau.de<http://www.eam.fau.de> ), which aims to<br>promote internationally recognized cutting edge science and brings<br>together 200 researchers from 9 disciplines with special focus on<br>nanotechnology, colloid science and particle technology. Konstanz is the most southern<br>German university close to the Swiss border, one of the German excellence<br>universities and beautifully located on a hill near the lake.<br><br>https://www.uni-konstanz.de/en/university/about-the-university-of-konstanz/<br><br>The University of Konstanz is 15 min away from the historic old town<br>of Konstanz and provides major lecture theaters and facilities for<br>workshops. Since Konstanz is a tourist magnet in the area, it has a<br>huge portfolio of accommodation but the prices vary largely depending on<br>the season with summer being the most expensive but September is still<br>not cheap. There are no hotels in direct neighborhood to the university<br>since the university is located in a protected area. The most convenient<br>hotels are those in the old town with a good bus connection to the<br>university. The bus ticket is included in the hotel price.<br><br>Z?rich airport is the closest airport and is the major airport in<br>Switzerland with worldwide connections. It can be conveniently reached<br>by a direct train connection to Konstanz running every hour (1:05 travel<br>time). Flying to Z?rich is the best option to reach Konstanz because train<br>connections (except the one to Z?rich) take very long. To reach the next<br>intercity express train station takes 2 ? hours either to Stuttgart or<br>Offenburg with a regional train, although the route through the black<br>forest is certainly one of the most beautiful train rides in Germany. It<br>is possible to take the intercity buses, but they are not much faster<br>than the train but connect to further cities like Munich (2.5 h)<br><br>Konstanz is rich in cultural heritage and the location of the "Konstanz<br>Konzil" from 1616 - 1620 where 3 popes wanted to take power so that<br>all important people of that time came together in Konstanz to sort out<br>this situation. Konstanz still has many buildings from this time and<br>older because it was not bombed in the war. Konstanz is the biggest<br>city located at the beautiful lake Konstanz, the 3rd biggest lake in<br>Europe. Nevertheless, it's still small with about 70 000 inhabitants<br>including ca. 11 000 students. The surroundings are very beautiful. The<br>lake offers opportunities for all kinds of water sport. The Black forest<br>can be reached by train in less than an hour and also the Swiss alps are<br>close. A major attraction of Konstanz is the flower island Mainau,<br>which attracts far more than a million visitors each year.
