To you, Tom, Walter and everyone -

We have indeed sadly lost one of the most exploring and innovative minds in our field. One of Howard's early publications ("Studies on the Validity of the Einstein Viscosity Law and Stokes' Law of Sedimentation" J Polym Sci XVI 19-30 1955) came out just as I was commencing graduate studies in Colloid Science, Cambridge, and the clarity of thought and precision of the experimental work presented made an instant impression on me - reinforced a little later by reading his great book "Analytical Ultracentrifugation in Biochemistry". It's still a good read - and not too much in science still reads well, half a century on.
As you note, Howard got around, both geographically and in science. I recall one near-embarrassing (for me) occasion. I was down to give a seminar in David Phillips's department in Oxford. Just about to start I asked David's advice - "should I assume that folks here are not heavily into protein hydrodynamics, maybe I should give a simple introduction?". David's response: "er . . . you have noticed our departmental visitor Howard Schachman, sitting in the third row ......?"
Very best wishes to all of you
Arthur

His slides showing the "Metabolism of Biochemists," which included a later revision explaining that the Academic-Industrial shunt was reversible, or his "Application to the Molecular Biology Country Club," where you were asked how many publications you had last year (50, 100 or 200, with the question of "If less than 50, please explain") and in what year did you win the Nobel Prize (or what year *should* you have won it) were priceless. His photo of his lab members, all of whom had Einstein's face superimposed on theirs, always got the audience chuckling. However, these slides were interspersed with incredible science- you always left one of his talks having learned a great deal.
