One of Howard's early publications ("Studies on the Validity of the Einstein Viscosity Law and Stokes' Law of Sedimentation" J Polym Sci XVI 19-30 1955) came out just as I was commencing graduate studies in Colloid Science, Cambridge, and the clarity of thought and precision of the experimental work presented made an instant impression on me - reinforced a little later by reading his great book "Analytical Ultracentrifugation in Biochemistry". It's still a good read - and not too much in science still reads well, half a century on. </font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" color="#950f0b" size="4">As you note, Howard got around, both geographically and in science. I recall one near-embarrassing (for me) occasion. I was down to give a seminar in David Phillips's department in Oxford. Just about to start I asked David's advice - "should I assume that folks here are not heavily into protein hydrodynamics, maybe I should give a simple introduction?".
