>From my unfortunately only occasion in which I got to hear a talk by Schachman (a Protein Society meeting probably in the early '90), I cannot but second what Tom said, one of the best talks I ever attended. And everybody should read his JBC centennial paper "From 'Publish or Perish' to 'Patent and Prosper'" (http://www.jbc.org/content/281/11/6889). As for the science, well, Tom said it all...

A really, really sad day...

To all-
A sad day indeed. Anyone who every interacted with Howard or heard him speak got to hear his unique mixture of incredible knowledge, great science and rapier wit. His slides showing the "Metabolism of Biochemists," which included a later revision explaining that the Academic-Industrial shunt was reversible, or his "Application to the Molecular Biology Country Club," where you were asked how many publications you had last year (50, 100 or 200, with the question of "If less than 50, please explain") and in what year did you win the Nobel Prize (or what year *should* you have won it) were priceless. His photo of his lab members, all of whom had Einstein's face superimposed on theirs, always got the audience chuckling. However, these slides were interspersed with incredible science- you always left one of his talks having learned a great deal.
I have often said that I have never explored a 'new' area of AUC where I did not find that Howard had been there first, and had explored it far more thoroughly than I.
Best wishes to all,
Tom
