I am pleased to announce that Beckman Coulter has successfully completed
investigating the XL-I cell data reporting issue and has developed a solution to
the problem. The cell data reporting issue affected ProteomeLab XL-I's using
interference optics shipped after January 2006. On occasion and under specific
conditions, data collected in one cell hole was reported in the adjacent cell
hole.

The root cause was determined to be an intermittent communication problem
between the DAB (Data Acquisition Board) software and the GUI (Graphical User
Interface) software when running Interference or Interference/Absorbance method
scans. During Interference method scans, the GUI was continually sending laser
setting information to the DAB for the next cell hole to scan. What happened
was the communication between the DAB software would sometimes get "out of sync"
with the GUI software, resulting in the GUI taking a scan before the DAB had
time to process the laser delay settings and move to the next cell hole.

The solution was to improve communication handshaking between the DAB and GUI
software, particularly when the GUI is sending laser commands to the DAB and
waiting for laser status. Software modifications were made to ensure that the
GUI waits for the DAB to process the laser delay command sent before scanning
the next cell hole. The reason this issue came up when it did resulted from
implementation of a new development platform and Real-Time Operating System in
late 2005 that introduced timing differences.

A new version of GUI software (version 5.7) containing the cell data reporting
fix will be available starting Monday, December 18. Please consult with your
local field service rep for details on how to obtain it.
