[RASMB] rehabilitating bad windows

Two quick questions:

1. What is the current conventional wisdom on polishing dinged windows?
We have a few quartz windows
with fine scratches and small gouges. Is it worth having them
polished? And if so, where?

2. We always clean our windows using the Walter Stafford trick of
incubating them for 20-30 minutes in the
bath sonicator with SDS. This works spectacularly well. A few of
our windows, however, appear to have
developed a sonication- and SDS-resistant residue. What do others
recommend for more thorough
cleaning? Chromic sulfuric acid? Nitric acid? Other suggestions?
