modern structural biology is the structural determination at high resolution of
biomolecules that are not amenable to crystallography or NMR. This includes
biomolecules that are natively unstructured and large dynamic assemblies. The
challenge in tackling these systems lies in combining a range of structural and
biophysical techniques into an integrated approach capable of utilising both low
resolution and high resolution techniques in
combination.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

style="TEXT-JUSTIFY: inter-ideograph; MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN
style="FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"><BR><FONT size=3>This research will be carried out
between the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory at Harwell (UK) and the National
Centre for Macromolecular Hydrodynamics at The University of Nottingham (UK).
The student will be trained in and utilise a wide range of structural and
biophysical techniques including small angle scattering, analytical
ultacentrifugation, protein crystallography, High-field NMR, small angle x-ray
and neutron scattering and protein expression and site-directed mutagenesis. In
addition they will be closely involved in the development of modelling
approaches to combine the data from these techniques to produce cohesive models
of large scale and/or flexible structures.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

the Science and Technology Funding Council (STFC) and the <?xml:namespace prefix

w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Nottingham</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> and is open to all EU
nationals. The position would suit biochemistry or chemistry graduates with an
interest in biological structure as well as graduates in physics or computer
science interested in expanding the application of their skills into the
practical sciences.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
