that the long-pass filter can come detached from the arm, and I suspect this is
what has happened. I believe the filter is just epoxied in place, and
can come loose due to aging rather than anything a user did. My understanding is
that some of the senior service technicians are capable of doing field repairs
on the monochromator, so I would try to make that happen (beg, grovel,

Dear AUC Techies

I picked up the Monochromator out of it's box and
I heard a glass like tinkling inside near the order filter. The order filter
only moves a small amount and won't go either way to it's normal stop. It's
apparent to me that something is broken. No one in the lab knows how this
happened. The last logged user got good results. It now will not pass any
energy.

The PI called Beckman and they offered to
replace it for an exchange price of $16,000.00.

Does anyone have experience
repairing/disassembling and reassembling one of these? Any hints, tips, or
suggestions?
