Ah, the infamous Pin21 on the Model E scanner…

Marc and I performed the first sedimentation equilibrium experiments on really highly concentrated proteins (hemoglobin and myoglobin), reaching concentrations over 350 g/l [Minton & Lewis (1981) Biophys. Chem. 14: 317-324]. I believe that this record for high concentration still stands.

Subsequently we built the first computer-based Model E absorbance scanner control and digital data acquisition system at the NIH, using an IBM AT running an early version of DOS and programming in Turbo Pascal. We had a lot of fun doing this, including some hardware hacking on the scanner. The system was later replicated in the lab of Ed Eisenstein at CARB.

I think Marc must have been at least 15 years older than me. He once invited me to play squash with him on a squash court located quite close to his laboratory in the basement of Building 35. I naively assumed that as a healthy young adult I would have no problem competing with an old geezer like him. Wrong! While hardly moving at all, he ran me to a frazzle in short order. Age and cunning trumps youth.

Marc Lewis will be remembered fondly by his colleagues and friends.

Allen Minton

A sad, sad day. I remember him as a great story teller and a truly compassionate soul. May his soul rest in peace.

Dear all-
I learned from Les Holladay that Marc Lewis passed away in his sleep last night. Marc was a long-time advocate for AUC, working hard to keep it available during the ‘dark days’ in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s.
He will be missed-
