Steve-

I think the need for the $15,000 US upgrade depends on the age of your
system. Beckman switched cameras and lasers at some point, and the new
acquisition boards involved were compatible with Windows 2000 computers.
Our system was installed in the 1996-97 time-frame, and we did such an
upgrade a while ago, mainly to allow for that computer upgrade. I don't
think there was any "official Beckman" way around it (could be some of the
users out there found alternatives).

On the positive side, the interference data was noticeably better when
they were done.

As far as Kanchan being able to use his Dell, I vaguely remember some
compatibility issues that made it preferable to stay with IBM computers,
but I certainly don't remember the details. We never experimented. Maybe
some of the users out there can comment further.

Good Luck,

John

Kachan,
We have been told by Beckman that in order to upgrade to a new computer
(our XL-I is circa 1996 and the IBM PC runs Windows 95) that we would need
a computer, camera and software upgrades that would cost nearly $15,000
US.
If you or others can find a way around this, please let me know.
