Hi Dave,

Sorry, for intern positions MedImmune does not sponsor the paperwork to
anyone who does not already have working Visa status in the US.
Students at a US university can get the "curricular practical training"
exception.  It is unlikely then that anyone from Nottingham would
qualify.

MedImmune is one of the few companies that is hiring and it may be worth
looking at the MedImmune careers web site for regular non-intern jobs.
But the local company HGSI has recently laid off quite a few scientists,
so the competition for the open jobs has increased.

Hello David,

We have 49 masters students on our Applied Biomolecular Technology MSc
here in Nottingham who we are trying to place in industry. It is not
unknown for us to place overseas (we have done Canada, Malaysia, the
rest of the EU and Vietnam before). They have done some AUC theory, but
can train appropriate candidate practically before the placement if
needs be.

Do you mind if I pass this opportunity over to our placement officer as
we maybe able to fill this position with a suitable candidate for you.

Hi All,

I have been given permission to hire a summer intern at MedImmune.  My
hope is to get a computer literate graduate student who already likes to
play with protein structure files and have them learn some AUC and
chemistry if necessary.  In other words, we will even consider computer
geeks who have never held a pipette.  But of course, if someone has an
AUC student who wants to play with HYDROPRO and SOMO and wants a summer
job, that is preferred.

I do have to note that MedImmune does not fill out H-1B forms for summer
interns.  To my understanding, this means that students studying on a
F-1 or full time student visa cannot apply for this internship.  The
only exception to this "no off campus work for non-immigrant students"
rule is if a school has an active co-op program as part of the
curriculum, then there is a special exception called Curricular
Practical Training (CPT).

Position Summary:                                

Perform testing, data analysis, and computer based structural modeling
in a biophysical characterization group. Correlate model predictions to
data collected by analytical ultracentrifugation, light scattering, and
other techniques.  Investigate the biophysical properties, hydrodynamic
properties, and structure of biopharmaceutical products such as
humanized monoclonal antibodies, recombinant antibody derived proteins,
and viral vaccines.  

            Major Duties and Responsibilities (including supervising
others):

Perform hydrodynamic modeling using the computer programs HYDROPRO and
SOMO.  Collect or generate model input data from experiments, previous
data records, and existing protein structure files.  Read, understand,
train on, and follow relevant SOP's.  Conduct experiments and calculate
simple hydrodynamic parameters or tables.  Maintain and calibrate
instruments.  Maintain general orderliness of lab and order supplies as
needed.  Maintain accurate lab notebook and update lab notes and data
binders.  Summarize data at department and group meetings. 

            Requirements/Qualifications: 

                        Education:    Enrollment in a Bachelors or
Masters program in a scientific discipline

                        Experience:  0-2 years lab experience 

                        Special Skills/Abilities:  Ability to generate
hypothetical protein structures (pdb) files from existing protein
structure files.  General knowledge of protein biochemistry and
analytical laboratory skills. 

                        Job Complexity:  medium

                        Supervision:  Receives general to detailed
instructions on routine work and new assignments.
