Fully funded Ph.D. studentships are available from
October 2005.

If you are fascinated by Thermodynamics, and are
looking for an interesting topic, you may wish to
consider spending your PhD studies in my group. The
projects are about the basic driving forces beneath
biochemistry. Water plays a central role in a wide
range of biochemical phenomena. However, its role is
still not well understood. Armed with statistical
thermodynamics, our aim is to understand a wide range
of questions - from the driving force protein folding
and protein-ligand binding to the mechanism of
survival under extreme conditions - all of which
depends on water and aqueous solutions.

There are two projects available: one is mainly
computational/theoretical, another is experimental.

Unfortunately, the studentships are only for british
citizens.

If you are interested, contact me at
shimizu at ysbl.york.ac.uk or visit
http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/chem/staff/ss.html

Previous knowledge of biochemistry/biophysics is a
plus, but not necessary. Even if you do not know
anything, do not worry about it. The change of
research field will be a fruitful experience.
