The AU crowd may be interested in a book reviewed in this week's Nature (9
May, p. 121):
Meselson, Stahl, and the Replication of DNA: A History of "The Most
Beautiful Experiment in Biology" by Frederic Lawrence Holmes (Yale
University Press, 2001)
This covers the experiments proving the semi-conservative replication of
DNA, done of course in the model E using N15 labeled DNA and cesium chloride
density gradient equilibrium (actually done in the Vinograd lab).
There is a picture in Nature of Matthew Meselson in front of the Model E.
It's nice to see this classic work getting some attention---I don't think
today's students have any idea how these important concepts were proven.
Greetings and best regards to all,
John Philo
